The Exeter-West Greenwich Center for Reading Recovery is located
at Wawaloam School. It is one of two Reading Recovery Sites in
Rhode Island and has just completed its third year of
implementation. Reading Recovery is a first grade intervention
program which uses trained, skilled teachers to deliver a daily,
one-to-one intervention program students identified as having
needs in the area of reading.
Recently, twelve teachers from six Rhode Island communities
completed a year long training program with Teacher Leader, Carol
Beatrice. Thirty previously trained teachers have been attending
Continuing Contact sessions throughout the year. The Exeter-West
Greenwich site is presently servicing thirteen Rhode Island
communities and twenty-two schools. Approximately 350 first
graders from these schools have received Reading Recovery
instruction during this academic year.
Wawaloam School is a fully implemented Reading Recovery school.
There are three Reading Recovery teachers instructing twelve
students. The principal is a trained Reading Recovery teacher
and sees two children on a daily basis. The Teacher Leader also
instructs two children on a daily basis. The school's total
first grade population is approximately 160 children.
The center is now accepting applications for the 1996-97 class
enrollment. Each Reading Recovery teacher must attend a week-
long summer assessment training program. The teacher must also attend
a weekly three hour graduate level course and participate in
teaching a child for the peer group at least four times during
the training year. The teacher will also work within his/ her
own school with four students each semester during the training
year.
